Your Highness is about as fun as a bag of schwag and an episode of Starz’s Camelot
Pot can make any movie better. Don’t forget, though, that you actually have to smoke the pot to achieve these results. Just watching a bunch of scenes where characters smoke pot won’t do it. This is a common mistake that Universal’s marketing minions might just be banking on with Your Highness, a film that beckons to current and former stoners like an extra-large tub of Chubby Hubby ice cream and an ’89 Grateful Dead bootleg (“Hampton, dude! They broke out ‘Dark Star’ that night!”). A tale of medieval princes who toke from jewel-encrusted 6-foot bongs, then slice up Minotaurs with their steely knives? Why, that sounds almost as good as the average plot of an epic Tenacious D jam! Sign me up.
But sadly, while current stoners will have the good sense to arrive at Your Highness pre-baked, a sad old person like me can become confused into believing that watching other people get high and ramble incoherently might be just as good as getting high myself. Strong though nostalgia may be, it doesn’t quite compare to good weed. Or, if you prefer: A joint in the hand is worth 200 on the big screen.
But what’s truly surprising – not just surprising but utterly lamentable, really – is that, despite its title, Your Highness features very little a) punchy madness, b) incoherent rambling, c) absurd asides, d) pointless digressions, e) general-purpose trippiness, f) actual jokes, or even f) pot smoking. Yes, you could safely assume that a film featuring Danny McBride as a soft, awkward, ne’er-do-well prince who lays about, puffing on a medieval pipe all day, might just embrace an overall stonery tone or ambience. But Your Highness stubbornly rejects all giddy weirdness and bizarre leaps into the abyss (or even scenes where a character sucks in too much smoke and then coughs for 5 minutes — which, to a stoner, are just as good). For what? A steady flow of really bad dick jokes. So look not to Your Highness for the delirious oddness of, say Clerks, or Dazed and Confused or The Three Amigos. Aside from one perverted, hookah-toking wizard, this film is about as unimaginative as any pot-themed movie has ever been. In fact, your average room full of semi-confused, not-incredibly-bright stoners could invent a movie fifteen times more fanciful, exciting and unpredictable than Your Highness, and all they’d ask for in return is an extra-large Hawaiian pizza.
The trouble begins with Thadeous, McBride’s prince, who obviously demands some of the whimsical self-delusion of Austin Powers to really spark. This is a medieval fantasy, after all, why not get a little erratic and freaky? Instead, McBride offers up the same old hapless-manchild routine we’ve seen fifty million times before, in which a pathetic, pouting middle-aged dude flails and grumbles and kicks medieval cans in frustration. Though not utterly charmless, McBride’s subtle sulking feels totally flat here. How could our binger-happy hero be quite so colorless and crestfallen? Should we really have to coach the star of a pot fantasy on how to inhale?

There are 2 issues I think about when it comes to women’s reproductive health and the federal budget showdown/shutdown of 2011: fight or right.
One is fight over Planned Parenthood. The GOP paint the 90-year-old organization as an syphon from tax payers dollars direct to abortion. PP is the nation’s largest provider of abortions.
But then I think of Roe vs. Wade of 1973, which legalized abortion in the United State. in every state.
Oh, and the law barring federal dollars from paying for it. The Hyde Amendment of 1976 nixes the use of taxpayer funds for abortion except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.
Fight. Right. Both sides seem mutually exclusive. Until the rhetoric…

A gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday and at least 13 people were killed, including the shooter.
It was not clear whether the gunman, who is believed to be a former student at the school, shot himself or was killed by police.
At least 20 people, including children, were wounded in the shooting at the school for students aged 10 to 15, fire department spokesman Evandro Bezerra told the Globo television network.
A fire department spokeswoman confirmed for The Associated Press that there were deaths, but she did not know how many. She spoke on condition of anonymity as she was not authorized to discuss the matter.
Terrified parents rushed to the school and television images showed them crying and screaming for information about their children.
The gunman was a 23-year-old man and former student at the school, a police spokeswoman told the AP. She also spoke on condition of anonymity, saying that she was not authorized to discuss the matter.
Local police commander Djalma Beltrame told Globo TV that the gunman left a letter at the scene indicating he wanted to kill himself, but that it did not give a clear motive for the shooting.
Television images showed three helicopters landing on a football field next to the school and then ferrying the wounded to nearby hospitals.
The shooting began about 8:30 a.m. local time (7:30 a.m. EDT; 1130 GMT). Witnesses said police responded quickly and traded fire with the gunman.

The iPad is almost a laptop computer. After all, you can write documents in Pages, and draw beautiful pictures in Sketchbook Pro. But when you need to print them out, your options get pretty slim.
Apple’s official answer for iPad printing is to sync your documents back to your Mac or PC and print from there. That works, of course. But that isn’t iPad printing. It’s Mac/PC printing. Fortunately, third parties have written apps to kinda, sorta, let you print from your iPad. We tried a bunch of them with a range of printers from Epson, HP, Canon and Lexmark.iPad printing apps claim to do a lot, but in our testing, many of them simply didn’t work. There’s definitely still room for a brilliant third-party app which can print to a range of Wi-Fi printers, because we couldn’t find one. The best we could find was Air Sharing HD, an app that reliably prints to printers shared by Macs on the same Wi-Fi network as your iPad, but even that had some formatting oddities.
There are three basic types of iPad printing apps. The first, supposedly, print directly to Wi-Fi-enabled printers. The second look out on your Wi-Fi network for Macs sharing printers, and can print to the shared printers without any intervention from the Mac’s user. This is a decent solution if you go somewhere with Macs and printers. The third type requires you to run a server in the background on a Mac or PC every time you want to print something. I consider that an unforgivable kludge; at that point, you might as well just sync your iPad.Direct Printing Apps
If you want to print photos directly to a WiFi-enabled Canon printer, Canon’s free Easy Photo-Print for iPhone worked on our iPad. It was ugly, because it’s an iPhone app that’s blown up to fit the iPad’s big screen. It only prints photos and screen shots that you saved to your photo gallery – no other kind of document. But it successfully printed photos to our Wi-Fi Canon Pixma MX870 printer.
HP has a similar free app, HP iPrint Photo, which we’ve gotten to work on an iPhone before. But on our iPad, it couldn’t detect an HP Laserjet 1102w Wi-Fi-enabled printer to print directly. It did locate our Mac and print to a Laserjet being shared on the network, though.
We had less luck with ePrint ($2.99), which looked promising. ePrint says it prints contacts, photos, Web pages, notes or your clipboard (which means you can copy entire emails and then print them). But every time it tried to print to our Wi-Fi-connected HP or Epson printers, it crashed. Trying to print to the Canon, it just stalled out. ePrint had more luck printing to a Lexmark laser printer shared by a Mac on our network.
Printing to Shared Printers
The best app for general-purpose printing is Air Sharing HD ($9.99), which searches your Wi-Fi network for Macs (not Windows PCs!) with shared printers and then offers them up. It can’t access local files on your iPad. Instead, it attaches to a range of “servers” including MobileMe and email accounts, and then prints to any printer connected to a Mac on the same network. Realistically, that means if you email any document on your iPad to yourself, you can open it in Air Sharing HD and print it. That’s not too bad. Air Sharing HD printed PDF, JPG, Pages and Word documents to shared Lexmark and Epson printers without a hitch, though it couldn’t print to an HP Laserjet 1102w.
If you’re planning to print out Office documents, though, watch out. Air Sharing HD printed Word and Pages documents in an odd format. One Pages document appeared with the left margin cut off. A Word document looked low-res, like a screen shot of itself rather than something rendered in the printer’s native fonts.
ePrint can handle some shared printers; we got it printing to the Lexmark laser printer, though it wouldn’t print to either the HP or Epson printers. Text printed from the clipboard showed up in high-res.

In its 10th season, “American Idol” has already gone coast-to-coast (and, uh, Milwaukee), in search of the next pop superstar. So when it came time to whittle their list of hopefuls down to the top 24, a few additional miles probably weren’t going to hurt anyone.

Those in the latter category included the trio of TaTynisa Wilson, Jerome Bell and Lakeisha Lewis, who puzzled the judges with their version of “I Saw Her Standing There,” and (most notably) the duo of hotly-tipped teens Melinda Ademi and Thia Megia, who failed to wow with “Here Comes the Sun.”
Others who stumbled in Vegas included the trio of Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Denise Jackson, who fumbled through “Hello, Goodbye” (first before a cadre of producers that included Interscope honcho Jimmy Iovine, Alex Da Kid and Jim Jonsin, and then on the Mirage stage), and quirky Ashley Sullivan, who decided to get hitched at Vegas’ iconic Little White Chapel before her performance, and then whiffed on “We Can Work It Out.”
At the end of the two-day Vegas performances, most of those who stumbled were sent packing — not to mention memorable contestants like White House intern Molly DeWolf Swensen, goofy Carson Higgins and rocker dude Caleb Hawley — as the “Idol” judges cut the remaining 60 down to 40 … and then put them back on the bus for Los Angeles, where the Top 24 was revealed in dramatic fashion.
