GUATEMALA CITY — A Guatemalan mother who says her child was stolen and later turned over to a U.S. couple for adoption said Tuesday that she will go to a Missouri court seeking to get her daughter back now that the U.S. State Department has said it doesn’t have jurisdiction to help return the girl. Here are the latest reports on Wash. jury takes its time in Powell voyeurism case
MIKE BAKER Associated Press= TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A jury handling the voyeurism case against a missing Utah woman’s father-in-law struggled to reach a verdict Tuesday, breaking for the day without a decision and asking a question that one attorney called “troubling.” Jurors considered Steve Powell’s fate for several hours before deciding to return Wednesday morning. Powell was charged with 14 counts of voyeurism after authorities investigating Susan Powell’s 2009 disappearance found a disc in his bedroom that they say contained images of young girls who lived next door. Shortly after beginning deliberations, jurors asked if the disc was found in boxes containing only items belonging to Steve…

Here are the latest reports on Doctor: Bulls’ Derrick Rose out 8-12 months
ANDREW SELIGMAN AP Sports Writer= CHICAGO (AP) — The doctor who operated on Derrick Rose’s knee insists the Chicago Bulls’ star can dominate again. It will take time, though. Rose faces a recovery of eight months to a year. The assessment by team physician Dr. Brian Cole on Tuesday means the point guard could return around mid-January to early February, or miss next season. The doctor added there is a chance Rose could be back sooner, but “we’re not going to rush it.” The Bulls had already said Rose has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Cole said there were also two tears in his meniscus cartilage. He said Rose is “doing great,” that the surgery went “extremely well” and he…
Penney has 1Q loss as new pricing repels shoppers

Here are the latest reports on Penney has 1Q loss as new pricing repels shoppers
ANNE D’INNOCENZIO AP Retail Writer= NEW YORK (AP) — Turns out, J.C. Penney shoppers don’t prefer predictable pricing over blockbuster bargains — at least not yet. The department-store chain on Tuesday reported a larger-than-expected first-quarter loss largely because customers were turned off by the retailer’s new plan to get rid of big sales throughout the year in favor of everyday low pricing. The idea of the strategy, which was rolled out on Feb. 1, is to discourage shoppers from waiting for the nearly 600 sales Penney used to offer each year. But the move has backfired: It seems many faithful Penney customers have stopped shopping altogether. Wendy Ruud, 49, used to visit the Penney…

Here are the latest reports on ND becomes nation’s second-leading oil producer
JAMES MacPHERSON Associated Press= BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota has passed Alaska to become the second-leading oil-producing state in the nation, trailing only Texas, state officials said Tuesday. North Dakota oil drillers pumped 17.8 million barrels in March, with a daily average of 575,490 barrels, Assistant State Mineral Resources Director Bruce Hicks said. That compares with 17.5 million barrels in Alaska, though still far behind Texas. The state’s oil patch is drilling at record levels and shows little sign of slowing down. The 152.9 million barrels of crude oil produced in 2011 set a record, surpassing the previous year’s mark by nearly 40 million barrels, according to the state…

Lightning sparks Hollande’s French presidency

Here are the latest reports on Lightning sparks Hollande’s French presidency
Socialist Francois Hollande assumed France’s presidency Tuesday, inheriting a country fearful for its financial future and jetting off immediately to Berlin to tackle his most pressing problem: Europe’s debt crisis. A flash of lightning nearly derailed Hollande’s blitz diplomatic foray, striking his plane and sending him briefly back to a Paris area military airbase. But Hollande quickly switched Falcon jets, flew to Berlin, and took steps toward bridging differences with German Chancellor Angela Merkel over how to reinvigorate Europe’s economy and its global influence. Right before leaving for Berlin, Hollande named a moderate, German-friendly ally, Jean-Marc Ayrault, as his prime minister….
The day I met Mladic

Here are the latest reports on The day I met Mladic
As the war crimes trial of General Ratko Mladic begins at The Hague, the BBC's Allan Little recalls meeting him for the first time. It was June 1992 and you could stand at a Serb gun position on Trebevic Mountain on the south side of Sarajevo and gaze down at the city beneath you, shimmering in the haze of high summer. The streets were laid out like a map at your feet. You could see how easy it was for the gunmen to pick a target. "Can you hit the Holiday Inn from here?" I asked one machine gunner. (The hotel would later house the foreign press corps; the BBC would set up its office there later that summer. It looked dangerously exposed to me). "Ha!" he laughed….
